Frequently Asked Questions: Newborn Session Edition

Welcoming a newborn into your family is such an incredible and fleeting season of life. As a mom of three and a lifestyle photographer, I know just how precious those early days are. Newborn sessions are some of my absolute favorite to capture because they preserve the raw emotion and sweet details that away all too quickly. I get a lot of questions from families preparing for their newborn photos, so I wanted to take a moment to answer the most common ones. Let’s dive right in!

When should we schedule our newborn photo session?

I typically recommend scheduling your newborn session during your pregnancy, ideally around the 30-week mark. That way, we can plan and pencil in your due date! For the actual session, the best time to capture those sleepy snuggly newborn moments is within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. Babies at this age are still in that super cozy, sleepy phase, which makes for dreamy, peaceful photos. That said, I’m flexible! If you prefer to wait a bit or if life happens, we can still create beautiful images outside of that window. We can wait until both mama and baby are feeling up for it.

Where will the session take place?

I specialize in the lifestyle photography, which means I love capturing your family in the comfort of your own home. It adds an extra layer of authenticity and helps everyone feel more relaxed. We’ll focus on simple, natural moments— whether it snuggling on the couch, feeding your baby, or watching siblings interact. I’m all about photographing the real-life moments that tell your family’s unique story, and the easiest and best way to do that is in your own sanctuary where you feel comfortable.

Plus, no need to pack up your newborn and haul everything to a studio, I come to you!

What should I wear?

My best advice: keep it simple and comfortable! Neutral tones and soft fabrics always photograph beautifully, especially in indoor settings where we need help bouncing light around. Think cozy sweaters, flowy dresses, or simple tees and jeans. Avoid anything with bold patterns or logos that might distract from those sweet, snuggly moments. For your little one, swaddles and soft onesies work perfectly! And don’t worry— if you’re at a loss and need some guidance, I can totally help you choose outfits that feel natural and timeless so that you feel confident and at ease.

Do you provide props or outfits for the baby?

My approach is all about capturing genuine interactions and moments, so I don’t bring elaborate props or backgrounds like you would see with studio newborn work. I want the focus to be on your baby, your connection and your growing family and its changing dynamic.

I do bring along a woven moses basket (a safe and photogenic place for baby to take some solo portraits) and a handful of jersey, muslin and knitted wraps. I have noticed that babies tend to respond better to their own wraps (it all has to do with familiar scents!), but I do have some on hand in case we need extra or something different!

With all that being said, if you have a special blanket or family heirloom, feel free to include it in the session! I’m always open to incorporating meaningful items that reflect your family’s personality.

What if the baby is fussy?

This is a common concern, but trust me, I’ve seen it all! Babies are unpredictable, and sometimes they might need to pause for a feed, a cuddle, or a diaper change, and that’s totally ok! I always allow plenty of time during a newborn session to go with the flow of your baby’s needs. There’s no rush, and some of the most tender moments happen during those quiet, in-between times.

How long does the session take?

I typically plan for about 2 hours, though I’m happy to adjust based on how everyone is feeling. That time allows for us to take things slow, there’s no pressure on you, on baby or on older siblings. We’ll take breaks as needed and make sure everyone is comfortable. I’ll guide you through the session and help you feel at ease so we can capture those natural, intimate moments.

When will we receive the photos?

After your session, I work to get your gallery ready as quickly as possible because I know how excited you are to see these images! Typically, you can expect your full gallery within 2-3 weeks. I also send a sneak peek within 1-2 days (usually the evening of your photo session!) to give you a little taste of what’s to come. You’ll receive all your photos via an online gallery so that you can download, share and print them however you’d like!

Can we include older siblings or pets in the session?

Absolutely! I love including siblings and pets in newborn sessions! Those interactions are priceless and make the session even more personal. Whether it’s big brother or sister holding the baby for the first time or your family dog coming in for a curios sniff, these moments are always worth capturing and are definitely a top priority for me as a lifestyle newborn photographer.

How do we book a newborn session?

It’s super easy! Just reach out to me through my contact form or send a direct email to hannahfromalabama@gmail.com, and we’ll chat about your due date and any specific ideas or concerns you have about an at home newborn session. At home newborn sessions are typically “penciled” in for 7 days following the estimated due date to help keep my schedule semi-flexible during that time period. I’ll make sure everything is scheduled and ready to go (done with a super easy-peasy booking link where everything can be handled digitally), so that when little one arrives, all you have to do is enjoy the moment!

Once mama + baby are home and settled, I have clients reach out via email or text so that we can get the at home newborn session concretely scheduled.

I hope this answered most of your questions about newborn sessions with Hannah from Alabama, but if there’s anything else you’d like to know, please feel free to reach out! I’m here to help make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible, so you can look back on this special time with all the warmth and love it deserves.

Can’t wait to capture your family’s newest chapter!
